PROJECT DESCRIPTION. Between 2012 and 2018, a major automobile manufacturer in Maranello (MO) constructed two large buildings intended to house the Racing Team Management. Our firm was entrusted with the In-Progress Structural Testing and the review of calculations. The first building had a footprint of 100 x 70 meters with a reinforced concrete basement and a steel superstructure. The same typology was planned for the second building. Both buildings were designed to have a second skin of colored glass.
THE PROBLEM. The architectural design did not allow for the installation of cross-bracing in the internal spaces, so the structural design placed them only at the staircase cores, making it challenging to realize the shear connections to transmit significant actions between the floors and the bracings.
THE SOLUTION. With our consent, a solution was adopted involving a dissipative steel structure capable of reducing seismic actions. However, it required the introduction of highly complex details to ensure the principles of capacity design, which mandated significant field welding with the subsequent need for extensive strength tests.
