PROJECT DESCRIPTION. The project involved the demolition and underpinning of a historic building in the center of Bologna, while preserving the external masonry facades as they were protected by the Heritage Authority. Subsequently, a new internal reinforced concrete structure would be constructed, attached to the original envelope.
THE PROBLEM. External shoring could not be used as it would have obstructed traffic on the surrounding streets, particularly the access route for an exhibition of a famous Vermeer painting.
THE SOLUTION. We designed a temporary metal structure capable of self-supporting the masonry during the work, without using intrusive anchoring systems. The static scheme was inspired by the steel hooping used for wine barrels.
